While Betsy DeVos is most well known for being our country’s United States Secretary of Education (the 11th one), she has an incredible passion for philanthropy in the education sector. It is rare to find someone whose passion overlaps with their actual career but Betsy DeVos is one of those people.
Her passion of education reform was first sparked when she was in Calvin College. It was there that she became involved in politics on the campus. Her campus involvement showed her exactly how much could be achieved through political work and she knew it was her life’s path to put that amount of work into changing the country’s educational system.
She worked dilligently throughout her college career to bring change to her own college and to build her career. Her goal was to get to a place where she could exact real change and she pushed herself forward to do that ever since.
She and her husband are both very philanthropic people and the two became passionate about education after a single incident that changed the course of their lives. When their children were the age where they would need to find a school, Betsy and her husband Dick DeVos searched for the school that would best meet their children’s educational needs. They came upon Potter’s House Christian School and knew there was something special about the school. Potter’s House Christian School had been serving Grand Rapids for over 30 years and the school typically works with low income families. These low income families often don’t have a choice where they will send their children. Many children simply had to attend whichever school their parents lived in.
These schools were often sub par and these families were more focused on making sure their kids had enough to eat or that they were protected from violence than doing tangible work to get their children into a school outside of their district.
The DeVos’s met many incredible families during this time, ones that were filled with love for their communities and for their family. They were moved by the fact that they were blessed enough to be able to choose whichever school they wanted for their children and decided to help others have that choice.
Since then, the DeVos’s have sponsored children who wish to attend Potter’s House Christian School and paid their tuition. They have become some of the school’s largest donors and make a huge difference in lives of children in the Grand Rapids area.
